SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests that steel shipments during the month of September this year surged higher when compared with the same month a year ago. However, the shipments recorded decline over the prior month.
According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.253 million net tons in September 2023. This is marginally higher by 1.6% upon comparison with the shipments of 7.140 million net tons in the same month a year before. On the contrary, the shipments during the month witnessed modest decline by 5.4% from the previous month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.664 million net tons in August this year.

The report provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products during the initial nine months of 2023. The shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet during this period declined by nearly 2% over the previous year. The shipments of cold rolled sheet were unchanged. Meantime, hot rolled sheet shipments surged higher by 7%, upon comparison with the initial nine months of 2022, AISI noted.
