ArcelorMittal Issued Official Statement on Tragic Incident in Kazakhstan

The company reinforced its commitment to complete the transaction at the earliest, in order to minimise disruption as much as possible.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading steelmaker ArcelorMittal, in a statement issued yesterday, confirmed that a tragic incident had occurred at its Kostenco coal mine in Kazakhstan on 28th October, 2023.

Further, the company confirmed that as many as 25 of its employees have been confirmed dead, with around 21 still missing. A total of 206 people have been safely evacuated to the surface. The company is devastated after the accident and is committed to do everything possible in support of those families who have lost their loved ones during the disastrous accident, it said.

As communicated officially by the government of Kazakhstan, the company has been in discussions with it with regards to the future of ArcelorMittal Temirtau and that it has recently signed an agreement towards transfer of its ownership to the Republic of Kazakhstan, the statement said.

The company reinforced its commitment to complete the transaction at the earliest, in order to minimise disruption as much as possible. It is focused on delivering a solution that is in the best interests of the people who work at the steel plant and its iron-ore and coal mines and also to communities supported by these operations, the company statement noted.
