AISI Announced September 2023 SIMA Imports Data
In September 2023, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which indicates marginal surge in steel import permit applications during the month of September 2023.
Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.289 million net tons in September this year. This is slightly higher by approximately 0.7% when matched with 2.272 million net tons permit tons recorded during the corresponding month a year ago. When compared with August 2023 final imports of 2.279 million net tons, the September 2023 steel import permit tonnage was marginally higher by 0.5%, AISI data said.

In September this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.659 million net tons, down significantly by 10.8% from the final imports total of 1.860 million net tons in August this year.
Black plates reported largest increase in September permits over the prior month, surging higher by almost 70%. The import permits for hot rolled sheets and ingots & billets & slabs too were up by 52% and 50% respectively. The products with notable year-to-date increases compared with the corresponding nine-month period in 2022 include cut lengths plates, standard rails, ingots and billets and slabs.
In September 2023, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for Canada. The largest offshore suppliers through the initial nine months of the current year were Canada, Mexico and Brazil.
