SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests that steel shipments during the month of August this year remained more or less unchanged when compared with the same month a year ago. However, the shipments recorded surge over the prior month.
According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.664 million net tons in August 2023. This is more or less same upon comparison with the shipments of 7.675 million net tons in the same month a year before. Also, the shipments during the month witnessed modest surge by 1.5% from the previous month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.550 million net tons in July this year.
The cumulative shipments by U.S. domestic steel mills totalled 59.530 million net tons during the initial eight-month period of the year. This is modestly down by 2.90% when matched with the corresponding period a year before. The steel shipments by these mills had totalled 61.325 million net tons during January to August in 2022.
The report provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products during the initial eight months of 2023. The shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet during this period declined by nearly 1% over the previous year. Also, shipments of cold rolled sheet were down by 1%. On the contrary, hot rolled sheet shipments surged higher by 6%, upon comparison with the initial eight months of 2022, AISI noted.
