Smurfit Kappa Announced Huge Investment at Spanish Paper Mill

The investment is likely to deliver significant environmental benefits.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Smurfit Kappa, Europe’s leading corrugated packaging company, announced investment in a state-of-the-art new waste management and recovery facility at its Nervion paper mill in Iurreta, Spain. The investment will help the mill switch to a fully circular production process. This is considered as a big step forward in its journey towards 2025 sustainability commitments.

The proposed lime kiln and gas treatment system will have an estimated production capacity of 120 tonnes of lime per day. The new circular system will transform the calcium carbonate waste generated during the production process into lime, which is subsequently fed back to the manufacturing process as a raw material.

The investment is likely to deliver significant environmental benefits. It will divert 75,000 tonnes of waste from landfill and eliminate approximately 450,000 km per year in road transport. The initiative has been developed in collaboration with several leading technology firms.

Javier Rivas, Smurfit Kappa COO of Paper & Board Europe noted that the company is delighted about the installation of the industry-leading system, which in turn will help the mill to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly. It will help in reuse and recovery of more materials, he added.
