The 777 deposit had served as the company’s flagship mine in Manitoba region for many years. The mine, which commenced production in 2004 with an initial estimated mine life of ten years, later expanded reserves by additional eight years. The company has decided to close its hydrometallurgical zinc facility in Flin Flon. The mine and the zinc plant are expected to be decommissioned by September this year, said the company press release.
The company thanked the hard work of Flin Fon employees in making the mine a modern, safe and successful one.
Peter Kukielski, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hudbay Minerals recollected that 777 was a state-of-the-art mine that represented the pinnacle of a century of shared success for Hudbay and Flin Flon. The closure marks the end of a mining era in the region. However, the company will continue with exploration activities in the region, he added.
