SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hudbay Minerals has announced temporary suspension of production at its 777 mine in Flin Flon, Manitoba, following an incident that caused damage to the shaft.
The incident occurred on October 9th, during the routine maintenance work at the hoist rope and skip. The hoist rope detached from the skip, thereby resulting in the skip falling to the bottom of the shaft. All underground workers at the mine were safely evacuated using the secondary ramp access. No injuries were reported.

According to the company press release, an inspection of the damage to the shaft is in progress. It may take several weeks towards full assessment and determination of remedial works. Accordingly, equipment and personnel will be relocated to the Lalor mine in Snow Lake.
Peter Kukielski, President and CEO, HUdbay Minerals noted that it was an unfortunate event. However, the strict adherence to safety protocols has prevented injuries or mishaps. The exceptional team in Manitoba is fully confident of overcoming these challenges safely and most efficiently at the earliest, he added.
The 777 copper, zinc, gold and silver mine is approaching final production in 2022.
