IIT Signed MoU with Start-Up to Set Up Green Steel Recycling Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a start-up to set up a steel recycling plant that uses green technology.
The Jammu and Kashmir-based Green Trek will use green technology to convert waste from steel mills into useable products. The technology will use no electricity and will avail less energy. The pollution-free process will use clean combustion technique to process steel mill waste into a metal with high iron content, which could then be used by various industries such as ship building as well as oil, gas and power plants.
According to Satinder Nath Gupta, Founder, Green Teck, the company is in the process of developing a circular economy model by utilizing extractive metallurgy. The molten metal produced by the process can be mixed with other metals to make various kinds of high value steel and alloy castings, he added.
An MoU has already been signed to set up a permanent plant in Himachal Pradesh, which will supply high iron content molten metal to leading companies including Ultratech, ACC and Ambuja Cement. The company is looking forward to necessary government approvals and licenses to go ahead with the construction of the plant.
