Coca-Cola Collaborates with ALPLA to Build New Mexican PET Recycling Facility

The plant’s annual processing capacity is estimated at around 50,000 tonnes of post-consumer PET bottles.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The joint venture between ALPLA and Coca-Cola FEMSA announced beginning of construction of new PET recycling plant in the South-East of Mexico.

A corner ceremony was recently held to mark the start of construction of the PLANETA recycling plant, which was led by Guillermo Arturo del Rivero León, secretary of the government of Tabasco and other distinguished guests. The facility, constructed at an investment of more than $60 million, will be equipped with the latest technologies, said the company press release.

The plant’s annual processing capacity is estimated at around 50,000 tonnes of post-consumer PET bottles. The construction and operation of the plant is likely to generate more than 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, in line with the government’s plans to promote development and employment in south-east Mexico. In addition to reducing plastic waste in the region, the plant will significantly boost the region’s economy.

The food-grade PET recycling plant is the third recycling plant by ALPLA in Mexico, representing Coca-Cola FEMSA and ALPLA’s commitment to sustainability. Furthermore, it is one more step towards a circular economy.
