Novelis to Construct New Advanced Recycling Plant in Kentucky, U.S.

The facility will help Novelis grow its closed-loop recycling programs amongst automotive customers in the region.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Novelis Inc.- the leading producer of rolled aluminum and the global leader in beverage can recycling announced that it plans to build a highly advanced aluminum recycling plant in North America. The groundbreaking is expected in early-2022, with commissioning scheduled to take place in 2024.

The new recycling facility will be built next to the company’s existing automotive finishing plant in Kentucky and will mainly support North American automotive customers. The plant will have a casting capacity of 240 kt of sheet ingot per year. It is expected to reduce the company’s total carbon emissions by more than 1 million tons every year.

The facility will help Novelis grow its closed-loop recycling programs amongst automotive customers in the region. It takes back remaining aluminum and remakes them into the same product, which in turn will be used in production of new vehicles. Furthermore, the facility will have the capability to process aluminum from vehicles at the end of their useful life, said the company press release.

Upon reaching full production, the facility is expected to add approximately 140 new jobs in the region.

Tom Boney, President of Novelis North America noted that the new investment in Kentucky will help the company achieve its sustainability goals and support the carbon-reduction targets of its automotive customers.
