U.S. Steel Join Forces to Launch New High-Strength Steel Railcar
The railcars will be used to transport loose bulk material such as metal scraps, coils, wood chips, steel slabs, and ore.Â
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pittsburgh-based leading steelmaker United States Steel Corporation (U.S. Steel) announced that it has decided to collaborate with Norfolk Southern Corporation and The Greenbrier Companies, Inc. on a new, sustainable high-strength steel railcar.
The Gondola railcar makes use of an innovative formula for high-strength, lighter-weight steel developed by U. S. Steel, which will reduce its unloaded weight is reduced by up to 15,000 pounds. The railcars will be used to transport loose bulk material such as metal scraps, coils, wood chips, steel slabs, and ore.

The collaboration works on the realization that North America's aging gondola fleet will soon require substantial replacement with a more sustainable design. It taps the potentials of U. S. Steel's materials innovation, Norfolk Southern's commitment to sustainable freight transportation, and Greenbrier's deep engineering capability. The newly designed railcars deliver significant benefits including extended lifecycle, increased sustainability and greater freight capacity.
