AISI Posted Notable Surge in Steel Import Permits

Black plates reported largest increase in June permits over the prior month final imports.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) published most recent Steel Import Monitoring and Analysis (SIMA) data, which signals substantial increase in steel import permit applications in the month of June this year.

Based on Commerce Department data, the permit applications totalled 2.965 million net tons in June 2021. This is notably higher by 12.4% when matched with 2.637 million net tons permit tons recorded in the prior month. When compared with May 2021 final imports of 2.523 million net tons, the June 2021 steel import permit tonnage was up by approximately 17.5%, AISI data said.

In June this year, the import permit tonnage for finished steel totalled 1.982 million net tons, up by 6.8% from the final imports total of 1.856 million net tons in the month of May this year. The estimated finished steel import market share in June was 21%.

Black plates reported largest increase in June permits over the prior month final imports, surging higher by 136%, followed by heavy structural shapes and oil country goods, whose exports were up by 53% and 38% month-on-month respectively.

In June, the largest finished steel import permit applications for offshore countries were for South Korea (284,000 NT), followed by Japan (111,000 NT), Germany (99,000 NT), Taiwan (94,000 NT) and the Netherlands (86,000 NT).
