Codelco Join Hands with Microsoft to Boost Digitization of Copper Mines

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Codelco- the world’s largest copper producer announced that it has reached a deal with tech giant Microsoft, aimed at fast-tracking the digitization of its copper mines. The move is expected to help Codelco extend automation and improve analytics.

In a statement, Codelco noted that the new partnership will help to refine its production processes to make them more efficient and sustainable. It foresees dramatic changes in the way it operates. The automated and completely remote operating techniques will not only improve productivity of its operations, but also lead to reduced risks and increased safety. It must be noted that several mining majors have been pushing forward with automation techniques at their mines.

The company said that the collaboration with the tech giant will include a training component for workers. However, the unions seem to be least interested with the move, as they see it as a threat to their livelihoods.

Earlier, the company had announced that it has developed a tool which now makes 100% of its copper traceable. Octavio Araneda, CEO, Codelco said that tracing copper through its mines would help the company to have strong transparency with regards to its resource use footprint.
