SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Codelco- Chile’s state-owned copper miner announced plans to cut carbon emissions by 70% by 2030. This was mentioned in the latest sustainability plans published by the company. The plan of actions focuses on five major areas of its operations and projects.
In order to achieve 70% reduction in carbon emissions, Codelco proposes to create a “100% clean energy matrix”. Consequently, it plans to replace all underground production equipment with electric vehicles and machinery. Furthermore, the company will explore new clean energy sources such as green hydrogen.
In addition, the company has committed to reduce its inland water consumption by 60%, when compared to current levels. Also, the comprehensive sustainability plan aims to recycle 65% of its industrial waste by 2030. As a first step to this cause, it will ensure 100% recycling of tires. The recycling of non-hazardous solid industrial residuals will be boosted.
The progress towards each of these goals will be evaluated with specific performance indicators. Octavio Araneda, CEO, Codelco stated that the proposed actions will strengthen the sustainable development of Chile and the world. The move, if successful, would create a new benchmark in industry-wide sustainability standards, he added.
