Variable Rate DRS Not Too Complex for Brits: ALUPRO
Meantime, 30% considered that the deposit amount should be the uniform, irrespective of the size of packaging.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Aluminum Packaging Recycling Organization (Alupro) announced results carried out by The YouGov insight about best practice deposit return scheme (DRS) design. Nearly 2,000 adults across Britain participated in the survey. The results of the survey, commissioned by Alupro, were announced yesterday.
The survey found that Brits do not consider the variable rate DRS as too complex. In fact, nearly 85% considered the system as ‘easy to understand’. Also, 61% of respondents extended support to higher deposits for larger containers.

84% of the survey participants suggested that the concept of a DRS was easy to grasp. Also, 85% of the respondents stated that the idea of varying the deposit value based on container size too was simplistic. Almost 55% argued that the deposit fee should be lower for smaller items and higher for larger ones. Meantime, 30% considered that the deposit amount should be the uniform, irrespective of the size of packaging.
The above findings are quite contradictory to the findings by the government research, which had said that a variable rate would be far too complex for householders. The recent survey results indicate that the public understanding of deposit return schemes has undergone rapid change.
Alupro urged decision makers to take the survey findings into close consideration and not to give more importance to simplicity than sustainability.
