Crude Steel Output by South American Nations Saw Drastic Recovery

The single largest producer in the region was Brazil.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) signalled drastic recovery in crude steel output by the South American region during November 2020.

The region produced 3.659 million tonnes (Mt) in November this year. This is significantly higher by 8.3% when compared with the prior year. The regional production had totalled only 3.377 Mt in the same month a year before.

The single largest producer in the region was Brazil. The country produced 2.954 Mt of crude steel, accounting for approximately 81% of the production by the entire region during the month. The Brazilian production witnessed a year-on-year surge by 11.2%, upon comparison with 2.657 Mt produced in November 2019. The second largest producer was Argentina, whose monthly production of 391,000 tonnes was almost 9.3% higher from the previous year. In third place was Chile with 100,000 tonnes output. The other two primary producing countries were Colombia (95,000 tonnes) and Peru (70,000 tonnes).

The above five countries together accounted for almost 99% of the total regional production in November this year.

The region’s steel output tumbled by 10.6% in the initial eleven-month period of the year, from 38.513 Mt in 2019 to 34.437 Mt in 2020. The topmost steel producers were Brazil (30.107 Mt), Argentina (4.318 Mt) and Chile (1.051 Mt).
