African Nations’ Crude Steel Output Declined in November

Egypt continued to remain as the largest steel producer in the region, with an estimated output of 672,000 tonnes of crude steel.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The African crude steel production recorded modest decline during the month of November this year, mainly on account of production decline in South Africa- one among the primary steel producing countries in the region. However, Egypt and Libya recorded increased output over the previous year. The regional output during the initial eleven months of the current year was down substantially.

The monthly crude steel production data published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) indicates that African production totalled 1.068 million tonnes (Mt), falling by 3.0% from the previous year. The region had reported a total production of 1.101 Mt in November last year.

Egypt continued to remain as the largest steel producer in the region, with an estimated output of 672,000 tonnes of crude steel. The country accounted nearly 63% of the total regional production. The country’s monthly steel output has surged significantly by 11.2%, upon comparison with the same month a year before. The second largest producer- South Africa reported 24.4% year-on-year decline from 431,000 tonnes to 326,000 tonnes. Meantime, the Libyan output posted 6.7% year-on-year surge.

The cumulative steel production by the African countries during the initial eleven months of 2020 totalled 11.241 Mt, down by approximately 14% upon comparison with the output of 13.081 Mt during Jan-Nov ‘19.
