Stora Enso Partnership to Boost Used Beverage Carton Recycling
The two companies have decided to initiate a feasibility study to assess the practicability of building a large-scale recycling line at the plant.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Stora Enso announced that it has partnered with Tetra Pak to explore the possibility of building a new recycling line for used beverage carton (UBC). The new line, to be built in Stora Enso’s Ostroleka mill in Poland, will process UBC from Central and Eastern European region.
The two companies have decided to initiate a feasibility study to assess the practicability of building a large-scale recycling line at the plant. The study would be completed in six months. The line will pulp and separate fibers from UBCs, which will be used as raw materials. Meantime, Tetra Pak would ensure recycling of polymers and aluminum, which would then be reused.

The new recycling line would have an annual capacity of 50,000 tonnes of UBC. This would boost the beverage carton recycling rate in the European countries from the current levels of 51%.
According to Markku Luoto of Stora Enso, the company wishes to use its knowledge of fibers and board to boost the collection and recycling of beverage carton materials-one of the widely recycled materials in Europe now. The proposed line would be the next step in the circularity of packaging materials, he added.
