Abu Dhabi to Construct New Advanced PET Recycling Plant

As per estimates, the UAE consumes more than 3 billion soft drinks and water PET bottles every year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Abu Dhabi-based Alliances for Global Sustainability (AGS) has partenered with Veolia Middle East, the local subsidiary of Veolia in establishing a modern plastic recycling plant in Abu Dhabi. The announcement to this effect was made yesterday by the Abu Dhabi Government Media Office.

The new plant would be located in Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi, KIZAD.

The first-of-its-kind PET recycling plant will house most advanced recycling technologies, to produce 14,000 tonnes of food-grade quality rPET. The plant will feature advanced sorting technologies , high-performance washing lines and state-of-the-art extrusion processes. The project will be supported by Abu Dhabi’s Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi Ports subsidiary KIZAD and Abu Dhabi Waste Management Center (Tadweer).

The new plant will fully integrate the country’s ambitious waste management strategy, which encourages diversion of waste from landfill and promotes a circular economy through recycling. It must be noted that production of rPET requires 75% less energy when compared with virgin PET.

The development of the innovative facility will help consolidate Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader within the sustainability sector, said Sheikha Shamma bin Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Founder and CEO, AGS.
