U.S. Raw Steel Output Tumbled 34%

The production by Southern region topped 501,000 net tons, closely followed by Great Lakes.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The weekly statistics published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) denotes notable decline in raw steel output in the latest week ending on April 25th, 2020.

The weekly raw steel production totalled 1.250 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 55.8%. This compares with the production of 1.917 million net tons in the week ending April 25, 2019 at a capability utilization rate of 81.3%. Year-on-year, the production recorded significant decline by 33.9%. Also, the production was down marginally by 2.1% from the prior week, when production had totalled 1.277 million net tons at a capability utilization rate of 57.0%, AISI reported.

The production by Southern region topped 501,000 net tons, closely followed by Great Lakes, whose production totalled 437,000 net tons. North East and Midwest production totalled 127,000 net tons and 132,000 net tons respectively. Meantime, Western region accounted for 53,000 net tons of crude steel production.

The adjusted cumulative year-to-date production through April 25th, 2020 was 28.850 million net tons in 2020. This is modestly down by 8.3% from the corresponding period a year before. The year-to-date production until April 25th, 2019 had totalled 31.449 million net tons.
