Young Iron Works was founded in 1902 as a blacksmith shop in Seattle by Mr. C. J. Young, a Swedish immigrant. The company's major market was the thriving Northwest logging industry. In 1912 Young produced its first product catalog describing their line of wire rope blocks and rigging. Other products during this early period included dump-truck bodies, power end-gates for trucks, skyline systems for logging and mining. During World War II Young was a major supplier of blocks and rigging for the Liberty and Victory Ships program. In the l950's and '60's Young continued to offer innovative solutions for loggers with the development of heel booms for cable cranes, cable operated log grapples and the integral logging arch. Other tractor and loader attachments acquired during this period included bulldozer u-blades, land clearing equipment and towed scrapers. In 1968 Seattle foundry was acquired and renamed Meltec. The 1970's and 80's saw the development of hydraulic booms and grapples for hydraulic excavators used in logging, material handling and long reach excavating. Grapples for log skidders were also added along with ROPS cabs and canopies, log forks and loader buckets. Nordick Manufacturing was acquired in 1977.
In recent years Young has continued to expand its offering of specialty booms, grapples and custom machine modifications for hydraulic excavators and material handlers. New grapples include four and five tine orange peel scrap grapples, combination magnet-grapple, logging, and rock grapples. A full line of clamshell buckets have been developed for rehandling stockpile materials and for use in digging applications.Commitment. It's more than just a motto.
