Reduce
The most essential way to reduce waste is to avoid creating it in the first place. Unfortunately, current consumer behavior is trending in the wrong direction. According the the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, each person created 2.7 pounds of waste each day in 1960. Today that number is 4.3 pounds. Some companies, however, are getting more efficient with their product packaging to save resources. Plastic 2-liter soft drink bottles are one example. Manufacturers have reduced the weight of the plastic used in these bottles by 0.6 ounces over the last 30 years. While this may seem insignificant, it keeps 250 million pounds of plastic from becoming part of the waste stream. Likewise, consumers can reduce simply by cutting back and making small changes. Cutting back on water and energy use at home is a good place to start. When making a purchase, look for durable products that will last a long time, rather than something that might need to be replaced quickly.
Reuse
Reuse refers to several things. It can mean investing in items that can be reused --- for example, using cloth tote bags when you shop instead of asking for plastic bags, or buying reusable food containers, such as a thermal coffee mug or a reusable water bottle. It also means looking for ways to repurpose discarded items, especially those that cannot be recycled and will end up sitting in a landfill for centuries. Consider repairing an item rather than throwing it out.If you're upgrading an appliance or gadget, see if you can donate the old one to someone who can use it. If a product has served its purpose, look for alternative uses. For example, clean used jars can be used to store leftovers or odds and ends.
Recycle
Recycling also keeps usable materials out of the landfill. Objects that might be considered waste are turned back into raw materials that can be used in the manufacture of other items. Recycling consists of three basic steps.

Hazardous Household Waste (HHW), sometimes called retail hazardous waste or "home generated special materials', is post-consumer waste which qualifies as hazardous waste when discarded. A typical home can contain an array of household hazardous products for cleaning, painting, beautifying, and cleaning around the house, yard, workshop and garage. When used, stored and disposed per label directions, most household products like cleaners, beauty products, medicines, auto fluids, paint and lawn care products pose little hazard to people or to the environment. However, improper use, storage and disposal of household hazardous products can potentially harm our families, children, and pets, pollute our neighborhoods and contaminate our ground, water and air.
These products exhibit many of the same dangerous characteristics as fully regulated hazardous waste due to their potential for reactivity, ignitability, corrosivity, toxicity, or persistence. It includes household chemicals and other substances for which the owner no longer has a use, the products used for home, personal, automotive care, pest control and other purposes. Examples include drain cleaners, oil paint, motor oil, antifreeze, fuel, poisons, pesticides, herbicides and rodenticides, fluorescent lamps, lamp ballasts, smoke detectors, some types of cleaning chemicals, and E-waste (such as televisions, computers, and cell phones). Because of these products potentially hazardous ingredients, special care is required when this types of materials are being disposed of or stored. The chemical-based household products from a single home may seem insignificant; but when millions of homes across Los Angeles County use similar products — handling, storing and disposing of them improperly — the combined effect becomes a major problem. Improper disposal of HHW can include pouring them down the drain, on the ground, into storm sewers, or in some cases putting them out with the trash. The dangers of such disposal methods might not be immediately obvious, but improper disposal of these wastes can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health. All U.S. communities offer options for conveniently and safely managing HHW.Remember to read product labels for disposal directions to reduce the risk of products exploding, igniting, leaking, mixing with other chemicals, or posing other hazards on the way to a disposal facility. Even empty containers of Hazardous Household Waste can pose hazards because of the chemical residuals that might remain. We encourage participation in these HHW collection programs rather than discarding the HHW in an improper fashion.
