Founded by Hymie Goldman in the late 1920’s, Utah Metal Works originally had more to do with the manufacturing of electrotype and linotype printing plates than it did with scrap metal. After Goldman passed away in 1955, UMW was purchased by Harry Lewon and his two brothers Rubin and Louis. The Lewon brothers folded the printing plate business and redirected all of the company’s resources to the scrap end of the business. Shortly after the business changed hands, UMW moved to its current location on Everett Avenue in Salt Lake City where since that time it has continued to grow, expand, and thrive. Today, the business is run by Harry’s son Don and Don’s sons Mark and Chris who are committed to maintaining the company’s long-standing tradition of excellence, integrity, and fairness.
