United Metal & Scrap Inc. was founded in 1972 by Bert Ekart as he recognized the need for a reliable and honest recycling operation in the Treasure Valley. Starting out with a location in both Caldwell and Nampa it was soon consolidated to just one location in Caldwell, ID. Bert worked to grow the business by adding a trucking company (United Hauling) that would allow the company to haul its processed material to the coast and on the return trip haul back various materials such as construction supplies.
In 1997 Bert Ekart retired and the company was purchased by his son and daughter in law Rod & Debby Ekart. In this same year, United Metal & Scrap Inc. formed a Joint Venture with Schnitzer Steel Industries (based out of Portland, OR) and formed what is now United Metals Recycling. Rod and Debby’s growth oriented vision was starting to take place in the following years with additional recycling facilities being purchased in Mountain Home and Gooding, Idaho.
2011 was a big year for United Metals Recycling as it acquired United Electronics Recycling, Barger Mattson Auto Recycling of Mountain Home, ID and added a large Non-ferrous/Ferrous processing facility in the capital city Boise, ID.

Recycling Center Core Values
United Metals Recycling operates both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal recycling in 4 locations across the state of Idaho. We have the capability and expertise to handle industrial and consumer materials that are at the end of their useful life. Once the scrap metal arrives at one of our yards it is carefully screened for contaminants and sorted into its specific recycling categories. All of our material is processed by sorting, shearing, shredding torching and baling in order to meet specific consumer needs to complete the recycling process.
United Metals Recycling has the expertise to identify and sort scrap metal into various specific ferrous and non-ferrous grades of metal. Depending on the material and the form, further processing may occur allowing the material to be effectively utilized by steel mills, copper or aluminum smelters, or other users of recycled materials. Most metals can be recycled almost infinitely which helps reduce our dependence on virgin natural resources, and since recycling is less energy intensive than using new materials, we help reduce our country’s oil consumption.
United Metals Recycling understands that one of the key benefits we provide our customers is a peace of mind that the material our customers are looking to recycle will be handled in an environmentally sound manner.
Recycling over 100 million pounds of material per year has enabled United Metals Recycling to reduce landfill volumes in areas our facilities are located by providing individuals and organizations an alternative way to dispose of their waste material.
Our commitment to operate environmentally friendly facilities is a building block to our success and commitment we focus on as we expand our organization. Below are just a few action items and examples of United Metals Recycling’s environmental commitment:
