We are Tenleytown Trash, Washington, DC’s only locally owned and operated, CBE certified waste management and recycling company. We offer a variety of services for every waste management need, and specialize in having equipment designed specifically for DC’s narrow streets and slender alleyways.
We are your neighbors. Founded by lifetime Washingtonian, Barney Shapiro, what started out of the back of his pick-up truck in the mid 90s, is now one of the dominant, full-service waste management companies in town.
Barney Shapiro, a Woodrow Wilson High School graduate, founded Tenleytown Trash under the principal of “better service for his community.” Originally a small builder and developer in the District during the 80s, he moved to the trash business in 1997 and hasn’t looked back. His “Team,” as he calls them, are like family, some of them having been with the company for over 10 years. And some actually are family.Tenleytown Trash runs seven days a week, 365 days a year with a fleet of 24 trucks. We like to say we are big enough for any haul, but small enough to take your call. Waste Pick Up

Tenleytown Trash provides regular waste pick up service at multi-unit residences, community buildings (schools, churches, nonprofits), large and small businesses and private homes in Washington, DC and Maryland suburbs. We provide customized care for each client and will help you find the best option for your property and waste needs.
Our equipment and receptacles are especially designed for our region and we customize our collection methods for each client and property. We can provide curbside, driveway, alley or hand collection of bins, large or even small dumpsters. Our lighter trucks won’t crack your driveway and can fit through your narrow alley or street. 

Recycling Pick Up

Tenleytown Trash provides Regular service of recycling at multi-unit residences, community buildings (schools, churches, nonprofits), large and small businesses and private homes in Washington, DC and Maryland suburbs.  Our recycling is conveniently single stream, which means that all recyclable items can be placed in the same container.Tenleytown Trash loves DC and loves the earth as well. As a waste management company, we see every day just how much goes to waste. Because of this, we try to educate our customers as much as we can on what is and is not reusable, what can be repurposed and what is recyclable.

Bulk Pick Up

Tenleytown Trash provides bulk trash removal for anywhere in DC and parts of Maryland and Virginia suburbs. Whatever you need help clearing out, and hauling away, we can help you do it.  Our courteous, respectful and efficient crew can haul away any amount of trash, large or small, from backyards, alleys, basements, attics, apartments or condos.  Our rates are less and our loads are fuller than national firms, and we are not limited in what we can pick up like DC’s Department of Public Works.  

Roll Off Boxes

Being a local company, Tenleytown Trash specializes in equipment and receptacles uniquely designed for our region. We provide roll-off boxes that will fit through Washington’s tight streets, alleys and driveways. Along with full-sized roll-offs, we have a selection of mini roll-offs that can be delivered into an area half the size of what is normally required for full-sized roll-offs. If you have no room for a roll-off at your property, we can send one at a requested time and wait while your personnel load it, or for a small charge, our crew will do it for you. We guarantee that whatever you order, it will be there on time and to the correct location.

We consider ourselves waste management gurus and we want to share our knowledge with our clients.  We have prepared a few resources for you to make sure you can avoid fines and also help save our environment by recycling correctly.  In the coming months we will also be setting up a blog with updates, photos and fun facts from Barney, as well as creating a curriculum to teach kids about the importance of waste management and recycling.

• Aluminum food and beverage containers
• Books (including paperbacks, textbooks and hardbacks)
• Brown paper bags (Kraft)
• Cardboard and paperboard boxes (including cereal boxes without liners). Cardboard boxes must be collapsed for collection.
• Computer printouts
• Corrugated cardboard boxes
• Ferrous and bimetal food and beverage containers
• Glass containers such as jars and bottles
• Junk mail
• Magazines and catalogs
• Milk and juice cartons
• Narrow-neck plastic containers (other than for motor oil) that carry plastic resin identification codes 1 through 7
• Newspapers (including all inserts)
• Non-metallic wrapping paper
• Office paper (including typing, fax, copy, letterhead, and NCR) and envelopes
• Plastic bags, e.g., grocery bags, newspaper bags, and shopping bags. --Please put your plastic bags into one plastic bag then place it in your recycling container. We will accept more than one bag of plastic bags.
• Rigid plastics including plastic milk/soda crates, plastic buckets with metal handles, plastic laundry baskets, plastic lawn furniture, plastic totes, plastic drums, plastic coolers, plastic flower pots, plastic drinking cups/glasses, plastic 5-gallon water bottles, plastic pallets, plastic toys, and empty plastic garbage/recycling bins
• Telephone books
• Wide-mouth containers such as peanut butter, margarine/butter tubs, yogurt, cottage, cheese, yogurt, sour cream, mayonnaise, whipped topping, and prescription (remove the identification label) and over-the-counter medicine bottles (note that the lids and caps do not need to be removed).
