Since 1948, the Silverstein family has gained the trust and admiration of all those who come through our gates.
Over 60 years ago, Texas native Myer “Mike” Silverstein married Marshalltown native Rose Lebin, and that’s where our story begins. After settling in Marshalltown, Mike, who worked in Texas for his family’s scrap metal business, decided that Marshalltown was the ideal place to start his business. With only a pick-up truck, Mike began to collect and sell scrap metal. While cruising through Webster City on the hunt for metal, Mike saw his opportunity. He bought some land and set-up shop, Webster City Iron & Metal Co. Through the years, Mike acquired additional property as his business expanded to what is now Scrap Processors, Inc. at 505 Seneca Street in Webster City, Iowa.
Eager to learn the family business, Mike’s sons, Ben and Kenny joined the team and eventually ran the four scrap yards, a chain of convenience stores, and a chain of auto supply stores across Central Iowa. In time, Mike and Kenny retired while Ben focused on the scrap metal business. Ben retired in January, 2009 selling his business to his family’s next generation, his son, David Silverstein. When David took over, he began to research some eco-friendly options to add to the services offered at his businesses, and soon after became permitted to demanufacture cars and appliances. In 2012, David opened his third location, devoted to appliance demanufacturing, located at 918 SE 21st Street in Des Moines, Iowa. Together with his loyal, hardworking staff, David has carried his family’s business into the 21st century.
