1960S - 1970S
Schupan & Sons, Inc. is founded by Nelson Schupan. The company collects and processes industrial scrap metal, and markets the material on a regional, national and international level. (1968)

Since 1985, Schupan Recycling has supplied material handling and processing services to beer and soft drink distributors and retailers throughout the state of Michigan. Schupan is the largest independent purchaser, processor and marketer of used beverage containers (UBCs) in the nation.In partnership with reverse vending machine maker TOMRA of North America, UBCR LLC is the collection and transportation arm of Schupan Recycling.
EVENTS RECYCLING
Events Recycling programs collect and manage the waste created by plastic and aluminum drink containers at races, concerts, festivals, fairs, tournaments and other large public events. Our recycling programs have been used throughout Michigan and have saved money for event promoters and venues, as well as made recycling more available.
It's just not enough to collect aluminum, plastic and glass beverage containers. They have to be processed correctly and efficiently or else it's off to the landfill.That's why Schupan built one of the most sophisticated beverage recycling systems in the world. And we're not stopping there. Schupan Recycling has evolved over the years in direct response to our customer’s needs.
FULL-SERVICE DENSIFIED & LOOSE FLAT PROGRAM
Our densifier program, complete with equipment, maintenance support, transportation and marketing services, was designed for distributors wanting to convert used beverage containers to marketable scrap on-site.
Our customers are provided with the highest quality equipment and service in the industry. Experienced Schupan professionals perform all of our maintenance, with 24/7 emergency on-call service.
Schupan facilities are conveniently located for pick-up or delivery of processed aluminum cans. Our customers can deliver processed aluminum as often as necessary, increasing cash flow and maximizing warehouse space. Or Schupan can provide a trailer for storage and convenient pickup of full loads.
BAG PROCESSING SERVICES
UBC bag handling can be a very manual process. But through Schupan's industry knowledge and experience, we have transformed this process into a fully-automated operation complete with trailer dumpers and the latest in sorting technologies.
Recent innovations allow the processing of co-mingled material, saving labor and transportation resources for distributors.
THIRD-PARTY SERVICES
The Schupan third-party program was created in partnership with TOMRA as an industry solution for retailers who wanted a better approach to handling the billions of containers returned to them each year.
Our transportation arm, UBCR, LLC delivers used beverage containers in high volume bins to a Schupan facility where they are processed using an automated bin handling system.
The third-party program allows distributors to concentrate their efforts on their core business. Retailers get the convenience of scheduled pickups for all containers by one vendor.
