History

Born on Salt Spring Island in 1972 John is a third generation islander.
He developed a passion for cars very early on getting his first car at age 10. Larry his father helped him get it running; they pulled the cylinder head off, did a valve job and put it all back together.
That was the beginning of John's career in the auto industry.

At the age of 14 he went to work for Richard Murakami where he honed his skills and learned a lot. At approximately 17 John started taking so many cars home that their yard became sort of a used auto parts and recycling business. From the age of 17 to about 23 John removed and recycled in the neighborhood of 600 cars from all over the island. During that period John became knows as "The Car Recycler". Moving on from this John worked at Salt Spring auto parts for a while as well as several jobs doing mechanical repairs. He has also worked in the commercial fishing industry as well as short stints in the logging and construction industries.

Salt Spring Metal Recycling started in earnest in 1997 when John moved to 440 Rainbow Rd shortly after his completion of Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanics and Commercial Transport courses at Camosun College.

The business has grown from a few cars a month, to the present operation that removes approximately 50,000 LBS of metal weekly from the island, consisting of loose metal, cars, trucks and almost anything else you can imagine.

John and his wife Jennifer have 3 sons John 7, Dan 6, and Jacob 3. The boys have already shown a keen interest in the business and have a firm grasp on the importance of recycling to help keep our environment clean and our resources sustainable.

Their family is enthused to continue serving the community for many years to come.
