Created in 2007, Recyc-Matelas is a Quebec company, based in Montreal, which innovates in the recycling of used mattresses and box springs. Concerned about the environment, Eric Castro and Pascal Cohen , co-founders, quickly realize that the management of old mattresses, because of their increasing number, represents a major challenge. They also note with regret that there is no policy for the ecological management of out-of-use mattresses and box springs. They therefore offer an alternative to burying these materials, which are just as recyclable as plastic and aluminum, by creating Recyc-Mattresses.
After only a few years of operation, the environmental impact is significant. Over 300,000 mattresses have already been recycled.
Manufacturers, retailers and political actors are today much more sensitive to this problem. More and more citizens are putting down their old mattresses themselves or are starting to put pressure on the officials of their municipalities to adhere to the initiative.
The Recyc-Quebec organization, the Metropolitan Community of Montreal, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks, several cities and several European organizations support Recyc-Matelas.
The notoriety of the company today exceeds the borders of Quebec. Recyc-Mattress has gable on street in Toronto, in the south of Florida and in the suburbs of Paris.
