Recycling & Disposal Services, Inc. (RDS) is a Ferndale recycling, garbage and waste disposal center, serving Bellingham and the greater Whatcom County, Washington area since 1996.We are more than a "trash or garbage dump" but rather a business that finds the right home for discarded waste. We accept both commercial and residential garbage and recycled goods; but not hazardous waste.
Before 1996, the larger Bellingham community had only one garbage transfer station and some of the highest tipping floor rates in the surrounding counties. Local business man Larry McCarter decided to take the risk of building a new transfer station and open up the choices to the community.Today, RDS employs over 30 local people and continues to innovate in supporting the environment and increasing the communities recycling rates.
Our Roots
RDS started in Whatcom county and continues to be the only locally owned solid waste transfer station. We have always focused on serving Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden, Sumas, Blaine, Birch Bay, Nooksack and Lummi Tribes, and all unincorporated Whatcom County.
Our Philosophy
Provide a competitive environment for choice, by competing on price, progressive recycling technologies, multiple recycling avenues and doing the right thing for our surrounding environment to minimize the impact to neighborhood ecosystem. Our goals are to continue to increase our recycling rates, which currently is over 20%.
Our Community
We live, work and play in Whatcom County, and we are committed to our customers, our employees, their families, and to all of our children's children. We want to do the right thing by making a greener planet! We provide local jobs and significant tax revenue for our community.
RDS continues to push the boundaries of greenness with a new recycling reclamation system and state of the art stormwater capture systems; plus a professional staff that knows how to divert "garbage" to the right waste stream or better still, to a reusable life as a recyclable. We are leaders in modern solid waste management for Whatcom County.
Poticrete: Turning Toilets to Sidewalks
In 2012, we got public attention outside the community for the clever effort of reusing 400 porcelain toilets to create Poticrete to pave new sidewalks in Bellingham.RDS' participation can be seen in the King 5 news clip which highlights our recycling facility and our own Pete Edwards talking about how we helped recycle the porcelain into good use!
