PSC Metals is about its People, Strategic Partnerships, Facilities, and Operating Capability. PSC is People, Strategy and Capability! Our people are our greatest asset. They are experts at developing and executing the best strategy for every scrap metal situation. Whether you are a small retail supplier or a multi-plant operation, our job is to provide a creative, well thought-out approach to assist with your situation. Our objective is always the best overall approach that leads to the best value for our suppliers and consumers. We are staffed with the most capable account executives and traders to start the process.
Strategic Partners and facilities make our system work. We operate our facilities in the heart of the country with over 40 locations, serving industry and individuals. We have been a valuable part of the communities in which we operate for decades. We meet the specific needs of these individual communities and provide employment, income and tax revenue. Our consumer partners are the key players throughout our industry. Their facility locations and scrap requirements are critical components. These consumers are the strongest links to our future. Our industry role can be most simply stated as, “combining our suppliers with our consumers in a long term economically viable manner which is mutually beneficial for all parties.”
The capability of our operating facilities ensures our long term viability. PSC Metals has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in effective, safe and environmentally compliant equipment. That investment allows us to efficiently collect and process scrap to meet our consumers' requirements. Requirements will continue to change in our industry and PSC Metals stands willing and able to continue to invest where necessary. We bale, shear and shred in accordance with our consumers' needs and requirements. We support our supplier and consumer requirements through every step in the supply chain with our dedicated logistics and transportation department, offering expertise in rail, highway, barge, and vessel transportation.
At PSC Metals, we value our employees and workplace safety as a high priority. We work diligently to ensure the safest workplace possible, since doing anything less could be detrimental to our employees, or customers and our suppliers. This means doing business the right way, with the highest integrity, in a corporate culture that always emphasizes safety awareness, accountability and, above all, preparedness. We take pride in working cooperatively with the host of governmental agencies that oversee our wide and varied operations. We make it a point to regularly review all safety and environmental programs. We assess the impact of new compliance requirements on our own operations and on our customers. We train employees so they know the latest rules and regulations and operating procedures. Because we recognize that eliminating risk is a two-way street, we seek input and ideas from our employees. They are an integral part of our safety program.Over the years, customers have come to rely on our exacting standards. They know a safe workplace is one that is efficient, maintains high employee morale, and reduces potentially hazardous and costly interruptions in service and productivity.
As one of the nation's largest recyclers of scrap metal, PSC Metals collects, trades, brokers, processes and recycles metal, both ferrous (containing iron) and nonferrous (not containing iron). Our investments in advanced technologies and our strategically located facilities help make us efficient, low cost scrap metal processor. Proximity to large industrial suppliers and major railroad routes, deep water ports and major highways provides us with a competitive advantage.Raw scrap metal is purchased from industrial manufacturers, railroads, auto salvage facilities, metal dealers and individuals. Scrap metal typically comes from obsolete machinery and equipment such as autos, railroad cars, railroad tracks, home appliances and demolition metal from buildings and other obsolete structures. Purchased materials arrive at our metals recycling facilities daily by ship, barge, rail, truck, car and even by individuals on foot.Once the raw scrap metal arrives at one of our yards, it is processed by sorting, shearing, shredding, torching and baling. This results in metal pieces of a size, density and purity specified by steel mills and foundries for melting and use in the production of new steel and other metal products. Smaller, more homogeneous pieces of processed metal have more value because they are more easily utilized by our customer such as steel mills and foundries. We have shredding systems at eight of our facilities. Shredders reduce auto bodies, home appliances and other metal into fist-sized pieces in seconds. Shredded material is then carried by conveyor under magnetized drums which attract the ferrous materials and separate them from the nonferrous materials. The remaining nonferrous metal is further sorted and graded before being sold. We ship to customers via bulk cargo ships, barges, railroad cars and trucks. Our new state-of-the-art nonferrous metals recovery systems provide a more pure (refined) and preferable form of ferrous metal which can be used more efficiently by steel mills. We invest continually in our facilities in order to maximize cost efficiencies, to provide high customer satisfaction, to deliver the highest quality products and to ensure regulatory and environmental compliance. We focus on continuous improvement of our facilities to upgrade infrastructure, and to improve customer experience.
