The Goodman family has been known as pioneers within the recycling industry ever since Hyman Goodman began collecting rags by carriage in 1898. He built the foundation of his business on two simple principles – integrity and service reliability. Now in the Goodman family’s fifth generation within the industry, we continue to dedicate ourselves to the same core values.
While we continue to operate with the same principles, our methods and materials have changed considerably over time. We have reinvigorated our primary fiber operation with the installation of a state-of-the-art Bollegraaf HBC 120 baler while we continue to diversify our business. Northstar now proudly operates a plastic shredding and granulating enterprise, which allows us to provide yet another service to our supplier base. We certainly have come a long way from collecting rags by carriage and we invite you to see our progress over the last 116 years. Northstar will continue to develop new markets and to make significant investments capital investments to ensure that we are able to succeed in our mission to provide the best service possible to our supplier base.
Northstar Pulp & Paper is a full service recycling and trash hauling company with a century’s worth of experience in assisting businesses to reduce their waste stream and develop innovative recycling programs. Our business, based in Springfield, Massachusetts, prides itself in being the only recycling company in New England that has the ability to fully process and market every grade of paper, plastic, and metal. Our recycling professionals have an intimate knowledge of the commodity business that can only be achieved through decades of hands-on experience. This expertise allows us to develop efficient, turn-key recycling programs that are specifically designed to complement our supplier’s existing manufacturing operation.
Northstar Pulp & Paper has developed itself into a leader in the recycled paper market of New England. We have proven ourselves time and again to be innovators and educators within the secondary fibers industry. We have an unparalleled knowledge of deinking waste paper grades that allows us to market our material effectively in all market conditions.
Northstar Paper RecyclingOur spirit of innovation traces back into the early 1970s when many mills in the northeast operated with exclusively pulp as furnish for their operations. Northstar’s predecessor company, with a steady supply of hard white envelope, promoted the use of this product to paper mills as a way to reduce fiber expenses while maintaining a premium quality product. Starting with just small hand samples and then progressing to a pickup truck delivering a small bale of hard white envelope, our organization proved to reluctant mills such as Strathmore Paper that secondary fibers has a place within even the most stringent paper mills. Within a few short years we could not find enough of this material to satisfy these mills appetites. We continue this spirit of entrepreneurship, gumption, and innovation today.
Northstar Paper RecyclingNorthstar differentiates itself from its competitors by educating its fiber suppliers to the various grades of waste paper and the markets for those products. We believe that by transparency and education (often through hands-on experience within our supplier’s facilities and tours through paper mills) we can improve the quality of fiber from our suppliers and create high quality waste paper grades that can sell at premiums to market pricing based on consistent supply and high quality fiber.
Northstar is an ideal partner for handling all of your fiber scrap:
Northstar has had a long tradition within the plastics industry but it wasn’t until 2013 that our organization made significant capital investments in the trade. We now operate two granulating lines and one shredding line to process post-industrial HDPE, LDPE, PP, PS, and PET – whether it’s our material or material toll processed on behalf of our customers.
Our state-of-the-art post-industrial plastic processing facility, which is separated from our fiber operation, has the capability of handling the above grades of plastic in every form. We can purchase or toll process conventional items such as parts or films on our Cumberland granulators or more difficult items such as large 1,000 lb. purge chunks or bulky pallets on our CMG shredding line.
Northstar Disposal has specialized itself as a waste hauler catering to the needs of the industries of Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut. This service allows us to provide a “one-stop shop” to our commodity suppliers whereby Northstar is responsible for handling not only the scrap paper, plastic, foam, and metal – but also the rubbish that an organization produces. We believe that this holistic approach allows us to fully comprehend the byproducts of an organization and in turn provide detailed recommendations on measures to reduce their waste stream and increase their marketable recyclable products. This approach allows us to add value to our suppliers by reducing their rubbish hauling costs, increasing their recycling revenues, and improving their carbon footprint.
