Our experience is grounded in steady growth and meeting the market's needs.
Caraustar was founded in 1938 as Carolina Paper Board Corporation. Our name has its origin in our history: it’s a combination of Carolina Paper Board (our first facility), Austell Paper Board (our second mill) and Star Paper Tube (our first tube facility) … Car + Au + Star.
We've built our business around our vision, mission and values. These are not just words, we stand by them and they are part of our everyday lives.

Caraustar recycling services collect, sort and process over 4 million tons of waste paper for re-use each year. In environmental terms, that is 60 million trees saved.
We handle all grades of recycled paper, cardboard, mixed papers, office paper waste, magazines and books. Furthermore, Caraustar recycles a range of other household and industrial materials including plastics, metals and e-waste.
Recycling Audits
A recycling audit is one of the first steps in starting a recycling program. Caraustar will determine where your waste is being generated, in what quantities, and whether or not it can be reduced, reused or recycled. Then, we determine what steps you should take in order to reduce waste costs and thereby increase revenue.Next, we can help you create a recycling program that suits the needs of your business. We'll assist you in educating your employees and provide you with regular progress reports.
Grades are cited per the ISRI Scrap Specifications Circular.
Boxboard - Consists of new cuttings of paperboard used in the manufacture of folding cartons, set-up boxes and similar boxboard products. The scrap is generated at facilities that mainly manufacture food cartons as well as other cartons, predominantly for display in consumer goods stores.
Double Lined Kraft - Consists of new corrugated cuttings with either test or kraft liners. This is the scrap generated at box manufacturers.
Rolls/Stock Lot - Kraft linerboard, kraft bag paper, white top linerboard, corrugating medium, file folder, bleached paper, bleached paperboard and pulp are sold for repulping and stocklot converting. Many of the sources of these stocklot grades are Caraustar core customers and recycling paper customers. We complete the loop by supplying cores and paper for recycling to mills, and in return, we purchase rolls and sheets back from these mills. Other sources of job lot include converters, printers, distribution centers and warehouses that sell obsolete, rejected and damaged fully formed boxes, roll and sheet stock. The recycling centers also purchase obsolete folding cartons, bags and any paper-based packaging materials.
Salvage - Caraustar has over 70 years’ experience in salvage paper recovery of damaged paper, paperboard and pulp. The company purchases damaged paper from paper mills, converters, truckers, railroads, shipping lines and warehouses. The Recycling Group works with salvors, adjusters, insurance companies, marine surveyors and brokers to ensure prompt inspection, pricing and removal of damaged paper. Common causes of damaged paper include hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, sprinkler breaks and fires.
