Liberty Iron & Metal Holdings, LLC and its affiliated entities are among the leading processors and brokers of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals in North America. Now in its 9th decade of operations, Liberty and its affiliated companies provide innovative scrap solutions to customers of all sizes.
The recycling process is critically important for both environmental and economic reasons. Individuals, companies and governments worldwide recognize that recycling is a shared, global responsibility. Utilizing recycled metals instead of virgin ore is more energy efficient, conserves the world’s limited natural resources and leads to cleaner air and water, all reducing dangerous greenhouse gas emissions.
Steel is the world’s, and North America’s, most recycled material and in the U.S. alone, almost 86 million tons of iron and steel were recycled or exported for recycling in 2007.1 Liberty has been a proud participant and contributor to the metals recycling industry for nearly a century.
Liberty prides itself in treating its customers on both ends of the recycling process as partners and strives to provide the highest level of customer service. Responding to and satisfying customers’ metal recycling needs at competitive prices is the cornerstone of Liberty’s commitment to its customers.
According to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc., during 2008 2 out of 3 pounds of steel made in the United States was manufactured using ferrous scrap. Recycling ferrous scrap, a vital raw material for both the production of new steel and cast-iron products, is fundamental to preserving the environment by conserving raw materials, reducing energy consumption and limiting landfill space.
Liberty produces high-quality ferrous scrap for its steelmaking and foundry customers. Consumer scrap items, such as old automobiles and appliances, and industrial scrap are received, tested, sorted and processed at Liberty’s various facilities to be returned to the new metal manufacturing process. Every Liberty facility is equipped with radiation detectors and experienced employees to ensure specific product quality. The combination of knowledgeable employees, state-of-the-art processing equipment and the unparalleled desire to meet specific customer needs is what has led to a growing list of long-standing satisfied customers.
Ferrous Processing Capabilities
Shredding – Liberty’s state-of-the-art shredding facilities, with three new shredders installed during 2009, provide extensive ferrous processing capabilities to return recycled scrap to the manufacturing process and its customers.

Liberty utilizes industry-sponsored and third party safety reviews to ensure a safe working environment for its customers and employees.
Liberty retains independent environmental consultants to ensure compliance with federal and state environmental laws. All trucks entering Liberty’s facilities pass through state-of-the-art radiation detection equipment. Liberty’s experienced staff carefully reviews all incoming loads to detect and isolate any suspect scrap. Liberty’s focus on environmental compliance not only protects our customers but helps preserve our environment.
Liberty and its affiliated companies operate facilities in Arizona, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Mexico.
Each of Liberty’s affiliated companies are experienced, multi-generational family-owned and operated businesses that focus on delivering the highest level of customer service. In 2008, Liberty expanded in both the United States and Mexico through business combinations with 3 similar multi-generational family scrap companies. During January and February, 2008, Liberty acquired Mercer Company, a Sharon-Pa based company, and entered into a joint venture with Niles Iron & Metal Co., Inc. of Niles, Ohio.
