Kramden was born out of a father/son project initiated in June 2003 by Mark and Ned Dibner (“Kramden” is ‘Mark’ and ‘Ned’ spelled backwards). The idea came from Ned, then 13, who suggested to his father that they refurbish and fix older computers to donate to middle school honor-roll students in Durham, NC who could not afford home computers. From July 2003 through March 2004, over 90 personal computers and 50 monitors were donated by individuals and businesses allowing Mark and Ned to create and complete 50 computer systems to donate. These PCs were given to sixth, seventh and eighth grade students on the school honor rolls but who could not afford home computers. By May 2004, each honor-roll student in the school had a computer in their home.
KRAMDEN’S IMPACT
In the years since, Kramden has awarded more than 24,000 computers to deserving students across 78 of North Carolina’s 100 counties. We have partnered with numerous schools, other non-profits and military aid organizations across the state to award computers to those in need. To date, we estimate that over 70,000 people have been positively impacted by a home personal computer.
FREE ASSET PICKUP
Kramden Institute offers free pickups for technology donations that qualify (typically a minimum of 20 desktops or laptops). Kramden staff will coordinate pick-up time(s) and location(s) to physically remove the equipment and provide an Equipment Donation Receipt that will transfer ownership of the equipment and all data liability to Kramden Institute. Once the assets have been loaded, they are then taken directly to Kramden Institute’s secure warehouse. Please call 919-293-1133 to talk to a representative or email us at admin@kramden.org if you have any questions or would like to schedule a pickup.
FREE DATA SANITIZATION
Kramden Institute is committed to data sanitization and destruction of your confidential information. Kramden physically removes every hard drive from equipment that enters our warehouse which are then brought into our employee-access only Data Sanitization Area, which is under continuous monitoring by a closed circuit television system and a monitored alarm system. All hard drives are then wiped of their data by a 3-pass software wipe (learn more here). If a hard drive fails the data removal step, it will be taken to a locked storage container until delivered to our e-waste recycler where it will be physically shredded. Certificates of Destruction are given upon request.
TAX DEDUCTIBLE CONTRIBUTION
Kramden is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Donating entities are eligible to receive a tax deduction for property donated under applicable rules and regulations of the IRS. The charitable deduction for contributions of technology equals the fair market value (retail used value in the current market place) of the donated property.
