We are committed to providing the best service, prices, integrity and attention to detail. Since 1891.
The Joseph Freedman Company, Inc., was founded in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by Joseph Freedman, great grandfather of the current company president, John D. Freedman. Fulfilling an important need for American industry, the company built a reputation for being one of the pioneering leaders in industrial scrap metal recycling, specializing in aluminum, copper, nickel alloys and aircraft scrap. From horse and wagon to today’s cellular dispatched vehicles, from hand selection and separation to today’s highly sophisticated on-site analytical testing equipment, we are one of the oldest and largest family owned and operated scrap metal recycling facilities in the Northeast.
The Joseph Freedman Co. operates two Springfield, Massachusetts facilities on over 20 acres. Our 120,000 sq. ft. indoor ferrous facility and headquarters on Stevens Street, and our 60,000 sq. ft. chopping operation on Albany Street, maintain strict quality, security, and environmental controls. We provide services to the New England area.
The importance we place on relationships extends to our customers and employees alike. Our employees spend their days on the front lines of customer service, where experience, knowledge and attitude count. More than half our workforce have celebrated ten-year milestones with the company, and our managers are cross-trained on all key aspects of the business. We’re immensely proud of our team, and credit them with the fact that the Joseph Freedman Co. has customers who have been doing business with us for more than 50 years.
Our attention to customer service is a source of pride for every employee who works at the Joseph Freedman Co. We welcome all customers, large or small.
We are the original green industry and strive to be leaders in progressive recycling by implementing best environmental practices throughout all of our facilities.
We understand that the manner in which we serve our customers is equally as important as the services we provide.
By conducting business with integrity, responsibility and concern for the environment, we provide maximum value to our customers, create a safe workplace for our employees, and set a strong ethical example for others in our industry.
By putting this philosphy into practice each day, we make it possible for the Joseph Freedman Co. to prosper as an innovator in metals recycling and an active participant in the well-being of our community.
In an effort to create transparency and trust, we have adopted multiple protocols to share all information and particulars on material received from our customers. All of our scales are certified and have external LED readouts to show our customers their weights upon arrival. Each scale is calibrated quarterly and sealed annually.
We have two employees dedicated to ensuring accurate reporting and pricing of all materials received and who interface between operations and marketing to ensure accuracy and clear communication.
Our protocols require any contaminated streams to be segregated into a contaminated material holding area to enable customers to review and examine themselves. If there are any weight or quality discrepencies, customers are notified within 24 hrs. of the problem being identified, photographs and particulars are shared and reviewed so that the contributing factors can be addressed and prevented from recurring.
