Jefferson Iron & Metal Brokerage is one of the oldest and largest scrap metal brokerage companies in the Southeast. Established in 1940 as a Birmingham-based scrap metal processing company, Jefferson Iron & Metal expanded in 1980 to include a full-service brokerage company. Jefferson Iron & Metal operated ferrous and non-ferrous trading office in Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, and Mississippi. Jefferson Iron & Metal’s brokerage team averages over 30 years of experience trading in excess of two hundred thousand tons per month. Jefferson Transportation owns, maintains, and manages an extensive fleet of rail cars dedicated to scrap delivery.
Steel City Recycling, located in Birmingham, Alabama, is a full-service scrap processing facility for both ferrous and non-ferrous material. Equipment and capabilities include a 98-inch 4000 hp Newell Shredder, copper and aluminum wire chopping, bailer, and two Harris shears.
The shredding of automobiles results in a mixture of ferrous metal, non-ferrous metal (e.g. alloys of copper and aluminum) and shredder waste called automotive shredder residue or automobile shredder residue (ASR). The Jefferson Group owns and operates the ARC facility, which mines “fluff” from old landfills to recover the metals.
