Scrap metal recycling in Alberta continues to be very successful. The overall recycling rate for all sources of ferrous and non-ferrous metals is approximately 75% and 45% respectively.Only a portion (30%) of scrap metals are considered part of the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream, and the recycling of these metals is much less successful. Most sources of scrap metal are not considered part of MSW, as they have traditionally been recycled for their high end value and are unlikely to end up in landfills.
Did you know that you can recycle lead acid batteries?
Recycling lead acid batteries prevents the risk of toxic components from the spent battery posing potential health and safety risks to the environment, humans and animals.
There are many MORE reasons to recycle lead acid batteries and other metals as well!
Saves Energy & Natural Resources
Using recycled materials reduces the need to mine for further minerals.
Conserves Landfill Space
Since the recycled material are being used to produce usable products rather than going into landfills or incinerators, our landfill space is conserved.
Saves Money
Recycling is often considered the least expensive waste management option for towns.
Improves Landscape
Metal and battery recycling helps eliminate unsightly piles of unused metal refuse and spent batteries in a safe and responsible manner.
Recycling used materials and products is a win-win situation for Canadian business and the environment. It is sustainable development. It reduces environmental problems, contributes to green house gases (GHG) reduction, reduces energy requirements, and maximizes the use of finite natural resources. Furthermore it has been shown to creates 10 times the employment and revenue, when compare to the waste industry.
