Ferrous & Non-Ferrous Metals
Green Planet 21 offers customized recycling programs for ferrous metals (iron and steel), and nonferrous metals (aluminum, copper, stainless steel, nickel, brass, tin, titanium, and others). With over 20 years of experience in the metals recycling industry, our experts will assess the scrap metal being generated at your facility and create a custom solution tailored to the specific needs of your company. Our goal is to maximize the value of your company’s scrap metal while minimizing its impact on the environment. We base our prices according to the American Metal Markets (AMM), ensuring that you receive the best price possible for your recyclable commodities.
At Green Planet 21, we specialize in servicing industrial clients generating large amounts of scrap metal, and offer a number of different collection methods in order to provide service that is convenient, flexible, and efficient. We offer 40-yard roll-off box service holding 8-10 tons and flatbed service holding up to 20 tons of material. We also offer 4x4 bins, and often create customized bins and collection methods designed to fit your company’s collection demands. We can provide same-day pick up and haul away service.
Green Planet 21 accepts most types of outdated machinery, including conveyers, industrial machines, and worn, displaced, and broken machinery. All metals are reprocessed within the U.S. We can train your employees in order to facilitate efficient scrap collection, or we can place one of our own employees on-site to manage collection, allowing you to focus on your core business.
As a full-service provider of various recyclable commodities, Green Planet 21 can lower your company’s freight costs by carrying mixed loads from your facility to ours. With our plants in Oakland and Wilmington located adjacent to two of the largest ports in the U.S., we don’t need to drive on the freeway to ship reusables oversees for recycling, allowing our trucks to carry 17,000 more pounds per truckload than most of our competitors, reducing our own freight costs and enabling us to pass on those savings to our customers.
Recycling scrap metal benefits not only your company’s bottom line, but the environment as well. Every ton of recycled steel eliminates the need to mine for 2,5000 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone. It also significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions affiliated with mining and steel production.
Plastics
With an ability to handle multiple grades of scrap plastic unmatched by any other large recycler in the country, Green Planet 21 proudly stands at the forefront of the plastics recycling industry. Our experts apply innovative techniques in order to turn contaminated plastic thought to be unsuitable for recycling into a saleable commodity, and we have helped take several Fortune 500 companies to zero landfill. Our clients save on landfill costs, turn an expense into revenue, and become part of a practice that reduces oil consumption and leads to a cleaner environment.
Paper & Cardboard
At Green Planet 21, we know that every ton of material sent to the landfill is costly to both your company and the environment. That’s why our experts are constantly striving to find ways to recycle every possible grade of paper and cardboard. Members of our team come from extensive backgrounds in the paper mill industry, and have an in-depth knowledge of how paper is made. This understanding of the industry enables us to advise our mill partners as to how best to reprocess previously landfilled commodities. Green Planet 21 finds ways to recycle grades of paper and cardboard that other reclamation providers send to the dump, such as coffee filters, silicon release paper, cardboard cores, and various paper boards that have wet strength. We don’t have a landfill affiliation, so we work hard to ensure that every possible pound of material is diverted, cutting your company’s trash disposal costs and increasing its revenue from the sale of recyclable commodities.
Green Planet 21 uses a competitive pricing model and will give you the best price possible for the recyclables generated at your facility. As a full-service provider of various recyclable commodities, Green Planet 21 can lower your company’s freight costs by carrying mixed loads from your facility to ours. With our plants in Oakland, Wilmington, and Tacoma located adjacent to three of the largest ports in the U.S., we don’t need to drive on the freeway to ship reusables oversees for recycling, allowing our trucks to carry 17,000 more pounds per truckload than most of our competitors. This reduces our own freight costs and enables us to pass on those savings to our customers.Baled paper and cardboard garner a higher sale price than loose recyclables, and we offer all of the necessary equipment through our leasing and purchasing programs. ROI is generally achieved in under a year, and we can provide equipment upfront at no cost that is gradually paid for through the recyclables generated.

Electronic Waste
Currently, only 15% of the electronic waste (e-waste) in the United States is being recycled, resulting in 3 million tons of electronics being thrown in landfills or incinerators each year. Green Planet 21 is doing its part to increase the percentage of electronic waste being recycled by offering free full service e-waste recycling.
Green Planet 21 is a certified e-waste collector and drop-off center. We can come to your facility and collect your discarded electronics at no charge, or you can drop e-waste off at one of our facilities. Once in our possession, we take e-waste to a certified dismantler, where our experts view the actual dismantling process in order to ensure that it’s done right and the e-waste is recycled responsibly. All electronic waste is dismantled and reprocessed in the United States. In the United States, 70% of heavy metals in landfills come from discarded electronics. E-waste contains hazardous materials such as mercury and led, which are dangerous to human health when disposed of improperly. Electronics recycling not only diverts heavy metals from landfills, but also diminishes the need to mine for virgin resources and reduces the quantities of water and electricity used in the electronics manufacturing process.

It is important to know about AB1826, the new California legislation aiming to decrease the amount of organic food waste being landfilled. Organic waste includes food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, nonhazardous wood waste, and food-soiled paper mixed in with food waste. As of January 1, 2017, in California, commercial and public entities that generate four cubic yards or more per week are required to contract with a recycling service to handle that organic waste. This legislation aims to get cafeterias, restaurants, supermarkets, and multi-family residential dwellings to compost or bio-digest their food and lawn waste. Going forward, the state will be able to further reduce non-recycled organic wastes and to further segment the waste stream, eliminating categories of waste we still bury over time.
Green Planet 21 has been working with food waste since 2008 and we have developed processes to handle it successfully. We are separating packaging from food, reclaiming nutrients and conserving liquids as possible, and partnering with companies engaged in bio-digestion and composting. We serve the large generators of organic waste and we offer a diverse program that improves the segregation of wastes, reduces landfill usage and cuts disposal costs.
For example, a large privately held, majority employee-owned American supermarket chain just accepted our proposal to pilot a program to process the food waste from six Bay area stores. Green Planet 21 will be handling loose produce and organics packed in clear plastic bags, like salad mixes. We will also be handling meat, seafood, dairy products, eggshells, grains, bakery items, coffee grounds and filters along with waxed cardboard.
After the locations are clarified and all of the agreements are signed, we will place equipment and begin the physical work of this project. We expect to begin with pickups three times per week and adjust appropriately as volumes vary. We have partnering vendor who will take the compost. Some of the waste will go to a large bio-digester where renewable natural gas and bioelectricity is produced from food and other organic wastes.
Commercial recycling is economically viable while, frequently, residential recycling is not. Green Planet 21 is a profitable company that offers multi-point channeled diversion and recycling for food, paper and cardboard, plastic, wood, and metal. One of the reasons our programs are successful is that recyclables have greater value when sorted at the generation point. We help our suppliers handle all of their outflows more effectively thus increasing their diversion rates and discard handling expenses while adding less and less to the hideous landfills. We expect this to be a growing segment of the business for our company and an improvement in how society handles food and other organic wastes.
