Garten Services, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that provides vocational, day activity and retirement services for people with developmental disabilities and long-term mental illness.The mission of Garten Services is to support people with disabilities in their effort to contribute to the community through employment, career, and retirement opportunities. Our actions increase society’s awareness of human potential.We fulfill our mission in part by providing Business Enterprises on a fee-for-service basis to businesses throughout the Willamette Valley. 

Hundreds of area businesses rely on us to operate our businesses in ways that effectively support their professional business image, environment, employees and customers. Garten customer businesses also become partners with us in fulfilling our non-profit mission to give people with disabilities the opportunity to achieve greater levels of self-sufficiency and independence. This is accomplished through programs like our Summer Youth Employment Program. This unique program provides paid work experience for high school age youth in the Willamette Valley. We contract with community businesses to provide this opportunity, at no cost to the employer. Garten provides services to more than 500 people with disabilities and hundreds of local businesses and agencies throughout the Willamette Valley.

Dedicated to Sustainability

Garten has been recognized as a leader in recycling since the recycling industry first began to move mainstream in the 1970’s. Garten staff members have played key roles in the creation and passage of a number of important legislative measures that moved recycling from the sidelines, where it was an initially “idealistic concept”, to become a mainstream business practice in Oregon. Today, recycling enjoys a vigorous market.
In early 2006, the directors and management of Garten Services realized that recycling, though a vital and thriving business and a broadly accepted practice, is actually one aspect of a much broader set of business principles.
Sustainability offers a balanced approach that synchronizes economic, ecological and social forces. Sustainability ensures that we are able to meet our needs today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs as well. We believe that sustainability is likely to become the most powerful force of the 21st Century. Accordingly, we have chosen to commit both staff and revenue to explore the underlying concepts of sustainability and to identify tangible, measurable applications within Garten’s business enterprises, program practices and community partnerships.
It is clear to us that Garten’s stakeholders will also benefit from our conscious organizational shift to practices founded in sustainability.

Recycling Services Division

At Garten, we know it’s important that everyone in the community work together to reduce, reuse and recycle solid waste. Recycling conserves our natural resources and diminishes the solid waste stream formerly discarded in our landfills.For more than 30 years, Garten Recycling has provided large-scale recycling for communities across the Willamette Valley.

• We work closely with haulers throughout the Central Willamette Valley to hand-sort and process the commingled recycling they collect on their regular routes.
• We work individually with local businesses and government agencies to assess their unique recycling needs, help them establish and maintain on-site recycling programs, and schedule regular
  pick-up by Garten’s truck fleet.

We offer three ways for your confidential document shredding to occur:

• For standard shred processing, you bring your confidential documents to Garten North Salem or Garten Eugene . We issue a Certificate of Destruction upon receipt of your materials, which are then placed in our secure Card-Lock Storage Area. Shredding is guaranteed to occur within 10 days. Your Certificate of Destruction records the movement of your confidential materials through the shredding process. The completed Certificate of Destruction is then mailed to you with your invoice for services.
• For mobile shred processing, Garten’s mobile shred truck comes to your location to perform on-site shredding of large quantities. Materials are destroyed just outside your facility through a shredding process that exceeds Oregon State Archivist standards for confidential destruction. A representative from your company may observe the document destruction—a process known as “witness shred”. Garten staff issues a signed Receipt/Certificate of Destruction for all materials destroyed; the shredded material is then transported to Garten North Salem for recycling. Garten can provide collection containers for your site or can service your containers. (Mobile Shred carries a minimum fee of $50.)  
• For walk-In shred processing, you carry your confidential documents directly to Garten North Salem or Garten Eugene anytime between 8am-4pm Monday through Friday. Your documents are shredded that same day. Witness destruction is provided by appointment only. Hours are 8am or 1pm Monday through Friday - call to schedule an appointment) and carries an additional fee. All walk-in shred processing must be paid at the time of delivery (via check, cash, Visa, Mastercard or American Express). Invoicing may occur only after a pre-approved credit application.

Zero Waste Service

Garten Zero Waste Events help people reduce and recycle waste ... and MORE! We provide access to an effective way to recycle and compost at gatherings and events, large or small. We also employ people with disabilities to staff events and help educate others on various aspects of reducing, reusing and recycling.

• Garten Zero Waste helps reduce the generation of trash. When you hold a Zero Waste Event, you demonstrate your dedication to reducing, recycling and composting items previously regarded merely as items to be discarded and disposed. 
• Garten Zero Waste is staffed by people with disabilities, fulfilling Garten’s mission. Zero Waste Events that include a contract for staffing see a Garten Green Team in action, supervised by a job coach. Whichever service level you choose, you can rest assured that your event will have a measurably reduced carbon footprint and it will embody social equity.
• “Zero waste” is a new way of seeing. Instead of viewing used materials as garbage in need of disposal, discarded items can instead be seen as valuable resources. These items represent jobs for people with disabilities, financial opportunity, personal independence and raw material for new products or other purposes.
• Garten is committed to sustainability. You can demonstrate your commitment to our environment by using our zero waste services at your events or gatherings. Choose from the four levels of service described at the right. We help people who want to make a positive environmental action know how to do it. Ultimately, everyone “wins”.
