BMG is a forward-thinking company. Our state-of-the-art technology enables us to use the most environmentally friendly and efficient processes to recover lead for recycling. The company is based in the Arnoldstein region, which has a long-standing tradition of non-ferrous metallurgy dating back more than 500 years.
The natural metallurgical resources of the region mean that the lead has a low smelting point, making it easier to be refined. In ancients times it was used for basic commodities, jewellery and architecture.
The first furnace was constructed in Gailitz in 1882, and in 1902 the whole Carinthia lead mining and lead industry was merged in the BBU. More than 80 years later, in 1988, the BBU was split into three industrial disciplines, chemical (today Chemson), lead smelting (today BMG) and mining, which includes zinc smelting (today Chemetall).
Today, BMG is responsible for recycling used lead accumulators, lead batteries, lead scraps and many other products containing lead to the highest technical level. Our principal customers for lead and lead alloys are battery manufacturers but we also have customers in the cable and chemical industry.
