Balcones Resources is a comprehensive environmental services company. We specialize in recovering resources through traditional recycling, document destruction and alternative energy. Balcones is not associated with a landfill, which makes us experts in diverting recyclable materials away from your trash bin and into our recycling program.
Working with Balcones Resources is a partnership. We offer janitorial training, employee awareness events, marketing materials and reporting, all geared toward increasing your recycling efforts. Your participation is rewarded through generous rebates and decreased landfill costs.
We started as a recycling company. It seems like an obvious statement, but it is what separates us from our competition. We were not founded as a side business to compliment garbage hauling. We subsist purely on our ability to recover resources and divert them from the landfill.
Kerry and Becky Getter founded Balcones Resources in 1994 in Austin, Texas. In the mid-'90s the only commodity being actively recycled in a commercial setting was white paper, and the Balcones team saw the need to change the way Texas recycled. "We had an opportunity to make an impact both environmentally and economically," remarked Kerry. Balcones introduced the Anything that Tears™ program, which simplified office recycling and allowed property managers to quickly quantify their efforts through monthly environmental reports and a reduction of costs related to landfill hauling fees.
Kerry remembers, "It was a challenge at first because we really had to get into the trenches and educate everyone involved in an organization. The janitorial crews were very important because we needed to move the material efficiently and effectively throughout the buildings, and their buy-in was crucial to the success of the program. Education became a necessary component, and we started to see the fruits of our labor in the form of increased participation and a reduction in waste from the different locations we serviced."
Fast-forward 18 years, and we have facilities in Austin, Dallas and Little Rock and have grown to become one of the top 50 recyclers in North America. We service approximately 75% of Austin's Class A office buildings and 80% of the Class A buildings in downtown Dallas. In addition to multi-tenant facilities, Balcones is also the chosen recycling partner for several corporate campuses, manufacturing facilities and distribution centers with major customers such as the University of Texas at Austin, the Capitol Complex, Seton Hospital System, Pepsico, JCPenney and the Clinton Library, just to name a few.
Our new state-of-the-art facility in Austin is a testament to our innovation. The $25 million facility has the ability to process 25 tons per hour. It is equipped with technology that increases our efficiency and allows us to handle new materials. Staying true to our green roots, the facility has several environmentally friendly features including passive lighting, electric car charging station and solar panels.
Kerry concludes, "We started as paper recyclers, but we've transformed into a full service environmental company that works with our customers to reach zero waste goals, streamline waste, educate employees, achieve LEED® certification, or simply take the first step towards a new recycling program."
Strategically located in the Little Rock Port Authority District, our Little Rock recycling facility serves the commercial recycling needs of the diverse businesses that are revitalizing Central Arkansas. A traditional recycling powerhouse, the facility efficiently processes approximately 20,000 tons of source-sorted paper, plastic and aluminum each year.
We keep the diversion rates high by providing each customer personalized guidance every step of the way, from setting up a new commercial recycling program and educating staff, all the way through maintenance and reporting. Every challenge and every goal is unique. But by partnering with our commercial recycling experts in Little Rock to develop a tailored solution, it's possible to become a steward of the environment and the bottom line.
The Little Rock recycling facility offers a wide variety of commercial recycling services to businesses in the Central Arkansas area that want to save reusable resources while reducing costs. Our mutually beneficial partnerships are built on the flexibility to customize a wide range of economically friendly recycling solutions across a host of industries. Simpler and more effective - Our programs just make good business sense.
In addition to meeting Central Arkansas' commercial and manufacturing recycling needs, the facility has the ability to recycle untreated wood, such as pallets or lumber scraps. More than 6,000 tons of wood is chopped each year and sent to pressboard mills and manufacturing plants.
Recycling services:
The idea that drives Balcones Resources is simple: Don't waste resources that can be used again. Whether you call it conservation, preservation, reuse or recycling, it's common sense. Balcones believes in extracting the maximum amount of value from all recyclable commodities. The actual recycling process varies depending on the material, but the general idea is the same.
If you have made it this far through our website and are still on the fence about recycling, consider for a moment the obvious reason that our planet's resources are limited, including the space to bury waste. Next, think about the energy savings and decrease in pollution associated with using scrap versus virgin material in a manufacturing process. Energy consumption can be reduced up to 95% when using recycled aluminum, 70% for recycled plastic, 60% for steel, 40% for paper and 30% for glass.*
It's required by law... If you wouldn't let a stranger into your home or place of business to search through your valuable personal information, why consolidate it in a place that is easy for them to find? Identity theft is a real problem. Stop it before it starts.
To Protect Against Identity Theft - According to the Federal Trade Commission, as many as nine million Americans have their identities stolen each year. Current FBI estimates find identity theft is costing American businesses and consumers $50 billion annually. When you consider the cost of professional shredding against the cost of not shredding, the math will always lead back to third-party shredding.
To Obey Laws Mandating Shredding - In addition to the cost of rebuilding credit and reputation related to identity theft, there is also the pressing consideration of legal exposure to your company. More than 40 federal laws mandate that all businesses, healthcare facilities and financial institutions protect the confidential information of their clientele. All of these laws to some degree require secure document destruction that only high-grade, third party shredders such as Balcones Shred can offer. We implore you to learn more about the legal compliance of shredding.
To Preserve Customer, Client and Patient Privacy - Whether you are a two-person shop or a company known worldwide, you have confidential customer information within your possession. Today's customer or patient comes to you for your expertise and has an unspoken expectation that you are protecting their privacy behind the scenes. Failure to do so can expose you to bad publicity, poor word of mouth and potentially lost business. Balcones Shred knows the ins and outs of all current privacy legislation including but not limited to FACTA, HIPAA, Hi-tech HIPAA, GLB, Red Flag Rules, SOX and Texas Bill 698.
To Shield Sensitive Company Information - Beyond identity theft, there is also the threat of corporate competitors interested in the details of your confidential business papers. They are potentially looking to seize any opportunity that may be readily available in a trash or recycling dumpster. This is why Balcones Shred conducts security audits to help you identify how confidential information may be slipping through the cracks of your operation. Based on audit results, we can help you write procedures and plans that will tighten your security and protect your business. When it comes to what to shred and what to retain, there are a number of strategic and administrative internal documents to note.
Balcones Shred is a trusted and secure commercial document destruction provider with locations in Austin and the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. We provide the gamut of document destruction services, from shredding to e-waste destruction.
Balcones Shred is big enough to meet all of our customers' service needs and small enough to offer personalized care. From two-person offices to multi-site businesses, we help our commercial shredding customers remain industry and government compliant.
