Twenty years ago, the United States alone generated more than 47 million tons of paper and packaging material a year, creating massive amounts of paper headed for landfills all across the country.
ACN’s founders, Yan Cheung and Ming Chung Liu, saw this as an opportunity. They recognized that the enormous amount of paper, instead of merely being dumped into landfills, could be a resource for paper mills that convert recovered paper into packaging materials and other paper products around the world.
They began business as America Chung Nam with a clear vision and definitive purpose: to create an innovative company culture based on strong working relationships and unmatched services.
Although ACN started out as a small player in the recovered paper market, we quickly grew into a billion-dollar global organization. We believe our success is the result of our core business principles — trust, integrity, responsibility, and a firm commitment to the ongoing success of our business partners.
Direct Supplier to the World’s Leading Consumers of Recovered Paper
In 1995 our founders established Nine Dragons Paper in Dongguan, China. Since then it has grown to become one of the five largest and most successful mills in the world and the largest containerboard producer in Asia. Nine Dragons now operates 29 paper machines at its 6 major paper-making bases in China, with a current, and growing capacity approaching 14 million metric tons a year. Put simply, Nine Dragons sets new standards for technology and productivity as well as social and environmental responsibility.
ACN is the primary supplier to Nine Dragons, giving us direct access to one of the largest buyers of recovered paper in the world. This is a tremendous advantage for our suppliers, enabling us to provide them with business continuity regardless of fluctuations in the global market.
We also maintain close relationships with other major paper manufacturers throughout China, providing priority order fulfillment, insight into paper supply in key markets, and on-time delivery — optimizing their supply chain.
ACN has in-depth knowledge of current market and industry trends. At the local level, we speak the language and have a thorough understanding of business practices and an appropriate business perspective. We also have extensive knowledge of local customs regulations and CCIC-certified inspectors in each region who act as stewards of industry best practices. Our experienced buyers are proactive with suppliers, and provide frequent updates on market trends and tailored, value-added solutions.
From the start of the order process through fulfillment, we pay meticulous attention to the details of every transaction. Our dedicated teams of marketing, customer service, and logistics professionals provide efficient order processing, fast materials pick-up, and timely shipment bookings. We have access to virtually all global shipping, rail, and trucking routes, as well as ports in all parts of the world.
Regardless of where the material is sourced, we cost-effectively and reliably transport it to our customers’ domestic or international locations.
Direct Supplier to the World’s Leading Consumers of Recovered Paper
ACN’s expansion strategy led to the opening of our first regional office in New Jersey in 1995, which enabled us to aggressively pursue new business opportunities on the East Coast and satisfy the growing needs of new customers in the Midwest and Canada. Still, the demand for recovered paper continued to grow. In response, we opened offices in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Japan, and cultivated new relationships across Europe, the Mediterranean, and Asia-Pacific. From these major hubs, we have the ability to source materials from almost anywhere in the world.
Today we export over 10 million tons of recovered paper from North America, Europe, and Asia annually. Our strong relationships with Nine Dragons, other paper mills, our suppliers, and our transportation partners enable us to adapt to the changing marketplace during volatile conditions. As a partner of ACN, count on us to be there when needed — because our continued success depends on yours.
In the years to come, our success will come from the commitment we made 20 years ago to work with our business partners and Nine Dragons to fuel ongoing growth and foster mutually beneficial, long-term relationships.
Nine Dragons will continue to expand, with plans to have 35 production lines and an annual capacity of approximately 14 million metric tons by 2013 — putting it well on its way to becoming the largest paper mill in the world. As it does, we will continue to grow and strengthen our relationship with Nine Dragons and other paper mills to meet the growing global demand for recovered paper.
ACN is already becoming the global leader in postindustrial and post-consumer recovered plastics recycling. We are a certified reprocessor of plastic materials, and maintain an outstanding reputation for quality.
Our global presence enables us to support a large volume of environmentally friendly recovered plastic grades. Our financial stability provides the foundation to meet or exceed our commitments to customers and suppliers around the world. Our Quality Control division ensures that materials are accurately shipped and delivered on time.
In addition to ACN’s expansion into the recycled plastics market, we are also exploring new opportunities in other types of recoverable materials, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The inclusion of these materials into our product line is a natural evolution of our recycled paper and plastics business which builds on our business model of transforming recyclable materials into valuable renewed resources. Reclaimed ferrous and non-ferrous metals are used to make new products such as automobiles, structural steel, aluminum siding, and toys. Making these metals available to our customers fits well with our philosophy of environmental responsibility, extending the useful lives of landfills, and saving billions of dollars in waste disposal costs.Reclaimed ferrous and non-ferrous metals are used to produce alternative steel materials, such as car frames, structural steel, and more. As in every aspect of ACN’s business worldwide, our goal in exploring the value and usefulness of ferrous and non-ferrous metals is to bring our experience, systems, and service to customers who need these materials to manufacture their products as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.
