About Yard

INTEGRITY. QUALITY. RELIABILITY.

Founded in 1930 by brothers Herman and Mandel Alpert, Alpert & Alpert Iron & Metal, Inc. has grown through 3 generations of the Alpert family to become a leading international non-ferrous scrap metal processor, recycler, and trader. The scrap metal industry itself began as many small family businesses. Through their early days as scrap collectors and peddlers working across the country, the Alpert brothers recognized that the close-knit industry was built on relationships and trust. Those values have remained important to Alpert & Alpert’s business throughout the decades. For over 85 years, Alpert & Alpert has proven itself a valuable partner to our suppliers and consumers. Our long history and strong family ties emphasize our principles:

OUR COMPANY

Alpert & Alpert Iron & Metal, Inc. was founded by brothers Herman and Mandel Alpert, who immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s. The brothers worked their way across an “industrializing” America, buying and selling what was once considered “junk.” With such an early foothold in the business, the brothers helped create the scrap metal and recycling industries. Their commitment to integrity, quality and reliability continue to be the principles that guide our company today. In the 1930s, the Alpert & Alpert Junk Company was established in Los Angeles, dealing in rags, paper, tires and metal. Metal became the primary focus and twelve years later, the expanding company moved to larger premises where the headquarters remain today.

In the 1950s, Raymond Alpert and Jake Farber, Herman’s son and son-in-law, entered the business. Five years later, the company incorporated as Alpert & Alpert Iron & Metal, Inc. Jake and Raymond presided over the company’s expansion into Asia and around the world. Their vision of global trade continues to be instrumental to the growth of the company.By 1980, Howard Farber and Alan Alpert had joined their fathers and became the third generation to manage the family business. Together, they built the company into what is currently one of the largest independent and influential non-ferrous recycling companies in the world. After over 85 years, we remain committed to the three basic principles the founders stood for:Integrity. Quality. Reliability.
