APRA, through pro-active initiatives, demonstrates to government and the public, that industry is taking responsibility for finding solutions to plastics waste management issues in Alberta
Stakeholder Cooperation and Issue Advancement
APRA facilitates members and industry stakeholders to find industry driven solutions that reduce plastic waste to landfill, utilizing existing infrastructures where possible. It does this through cooperation between industry and all levels of government, particularly Alberta Action on Waste.
Communication
APRA spearheads contact and acts as a liaison with government and communicates the work of APRA, CPIA, and the plastics industry on waste issues to the public, media and interest groups.
Resources
APRA provides information to interested parties and the general public.
Most plastics in use today are marked with “Resin Identification Codes”. These numbered symbols make it much easier for plastics collectors and recycle processors to keep the various resin types, or polymers, separate. This system allows recycle processors to control the quality and characteristics of their production. Recycled low density polyethelene (LDPE) can then come much closer to matching the performance of new LDPE when it’s re-manufactured into new product. The system uses numbered symbols one through seven to aid identification. In Alberta, we have outlets for all seven codes if the plastics are separated and relatively free of contamination.
