Back in the mid 1980’s I threw a soda can in the trash and my older sister Elizabeth scolded me saying, “If you fill the trash with items that we can easily recycle, then there will be no place left for our kids to put their garbage”.That conversation always stuck in my mind. If we fill our limited garbage space with recyclables, then where are we going to put our trash? I don’t know and I really don’t ever want to find the answer to that question.
Have you ever found yourself hunched over a garbage can pulling out items that should have been thrown into the recycling bin, (which is usually just a few feet away)? I have, on several occasions. It’s so easy to do the right thing, yet some people still just don’t, “get it”. Fortunately everyone down here at All Goods Electronics really does. We are all passionate about what we do and why it is so important to reduce, reuse and recycle.
My education in the recycling business started in 1994 when I worked for a large auto dismantling company in San Jose. I loved the idea that the parts and pieces coming off these junk cars would get sold to people who were going to shine them up and put them back into use on their personal vehicles. The remains of the cars went into a crusher and were then sent off to the metal recycler to be melted down so that the materials could be re-purposed, somewhat like a soda can or a broken computer, only on a much larger scale.
It wasn’t too long after that job when I got my first lesson in electronic surplus recycling. The year was 1998 and while working for a local communications firm I stumbled upon approximately 30 pallets of old computers that a large company was going to throw away. A deal was stuck, (free) and we got busy learning how to efficiently recycle computers and electronics. It was a lot of work but I relished in the familiar process of taking something that was considered junk, getting many of the parts and pieces to be put back into service and then recycling the rest.
Years later the wife and I started our own recycling company. All Goods Electronics is a local family owned small business that is doing our part to make the world a better place. It might be one piece at a time, but every little bit does make a difference. We always aim to do the right thing in our personal and professional lives, no matter what the circumstance or consequence. We live near Santa Cruz with our 4 children and are very grateful that we get to enjoy life and raise our family surrounded by such natural beauty.
Our employees tend to be local college students that subscribe to the mantra of reduce, reuse and recycle. We hope to continue in making many new friends and customers along the way for years to come.
We lost my dear sister Elizabeth to cancer at age 49 and it still breaks my heart, of course it always will. I think she would really get a kick out of knowing that in some small way so long ago; she helped to chart the course for my family all these years later.
