Aevitas is a true Canadian entrepreneurial success story. Beginning in 1993 the co-founders identified a need in the market to deal with the growing storage of PCB lighting ballasts. There was no disposal outlet for PCB material at this time so Aevitas developed an on-site service to dismantle the ballast isolating the PCB component. The metals and other materials were recovered and recycled. The PCB material was safely repackaged and left behind. Immediate benefits recognized by the customer included minimizing storage and waste reporting requirements. The long term benefit to the environment was recycling materials previously considered as unrecyclable. This is how it all began.
As pioneers in the recycling industry the business owners were concerned by the amount of mercury bearing lamps simply going to landfill. In 1995 Aevitas developed a lamp processing system to separate and recycle the individual components. In 1997 Aevitas established the first approved commercial retort oven in Canada. This process safely captures all mercury from the individual components. The remaining mercury free materials can now be fully recycled. Nothing goes to landfill.
The next growth opportunity in the company's evolution was to recycle PCB transformers. Determined to recycle the used transformer oil Aevitas purchased a PCB dechlorination process from Ontario Hydro Research. This technology renders the oil completely free of PCB contamination and available for reuse in electrical equipment. From this point Aevitas implemented a growth plan expanding capabilities while holding true to the original goal of developing recycling technologies.
Twenty years later Aevitas has established itself as an industry leader providing a full spectrum of safe and efficient environmental services. To meet market demand Aevitas now owns and operates eight (8) facilities across Canada with one (1) strategically located in Detroit MI.
