About Yard

Welcome to the online home of the Addison County Solid Waste Management District. Here you will find details about our programs and services, district news and publications, and practical information to help you properly recycle or dispose of household and business waste items.

Stop by the District Transfer Station to pick up a Soilsaver compost bin and a “Sure-Close” kitchen collector, and start composting at home! Turn food scraps and yard waste into rich, organic food for your garden.  Food and yard waste combined represent about 25% of our waste.  By composting these materials at home, we can save money while keeping waste out of landfills!  Composting benefits everyone by reducing waste and helping summer vegetable and flower gardens flourish.

The Addison County Solid Waste Management District (ACSWMD) is a union municipal district that exists to cooperatively and comprehensively address the solid waste management interests of its 20 member towns. The purpose of the District is to promote waste reduction, maximize diversion of wastes through reuse, recycling and composting, and to provide for the disposal of remaining wastes.  The District Office is open for business every Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.The District Transfer Station on Rte. 7 in Middlebury is available for residents and businesses to dispose of or recycle bulky items and special wastes. The District also operates the Hazwaste Center at the Transfer Station, and promotes other composting, reuse, and educational programs.

Household and Business Recycling List

Recycling in the Addison County Solid Waste Management District is easy with single stream collection.  Also known as all-in-one recycling, this simply means that you can now place all your recyclable materials together in one bin.  Your town or hauler collects the material and takes it to the Chittenden Solid Waste District’s Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), where they use machinery to separate all the different materials and prepare them to be sold.

Recycling Computers and Home Electronics

Electronics recycling is good for the environment! It conserves resources including non-renewable precious metals, petroleum products, energy, and more! It also saves landfill space. Did you know that an estimated 60 million computers will be deemed obsolete yearly in the U.S?Vermont recently became the 21st state to pass an electronic waste (E-waste) recycling law, which establishes producer responsibility for collecting and recycling E-waste from households, charities, schools and businesses. The law will ban disposal of E-waste on January 1, 2011, and will provide convenient and free collection of certain electronics beginning on July 1, 2011. The District Transfer Station will remain a collection point under this new system. Click here for more information!

Electronics recycling also reduces hazards by keeping potentially hazardous materials out of landfills, and promotes jobs in the reuse, repair and recycling industry. All the electronics listed below are banned from landfill disposal in Vermont, and may be recycled at the District Transfer Station. Nominal fees may apply.Vermont’s electronic waste law bans the disposal of certain electronic devices and provides for FREE and convenient collection of computers, monitors, printers, computer peripherals, and televisions for covered entities: consumers, charities, school districts, and small businesses that employ 10 or fewer individuals. Other individuals who bring in seven (7) or fewer devices can also recycle these devices at no charge.
