WWF Turkiye Launched Initiative to Cut Plastic Waste

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Wide Fund (WWF) for Nature Turkiye announced launch of a new project aimed at tackling plastic waste in Turkiye seas. The project titled ‘Adopt a Beach’ is an attempt to prevent plastic pollution in seas by ensuring cooperation of people. Accordingly, volunteer teams would symbolically adopt a beach and gather scientific data on marine plastic pollution.

Togay Tanyolaç, a specialist in plastic projects highlighted the important role played by volunteers and young individuals in driving the project forward. The primary objective of the project is to collect critical data on composition of coastal debris in nations around the Mediterranean Sea.

As per rough estimates, approximately 24,000 tons of plastic pollution enter the oceans surrounding Turkiye every year. The rising plastic pollution has become a threat not only to nature but also to human health.

The volunteer groups who wish to be part of the project are required to complete registration process on the official website. They are allowed to select a beach location of their choice at the time of registration.

It will take four to six hours for a volunteer group comprising of eight members to successfully complete the sorting process. The action will be repeated four times a year, the data of which will be officially published in the website.
