SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The World Steel Association (worldsteel) Steel Safety Day will focus on various aspects of process safety. The day, which was originally scheduled for April 28th, has now been delayed to 21st, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Carlos Martinez, 2020 has been a year full of challenges for the global steel industry. The industry has gained many a new lesson, being an active participant in mitigating effects of the pandemic and the human and economic losses caused by it.

The day, originally aligned with the International Labour Organization’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work, would have seen its members carrying out detailed on-site management visits focusing on most common causes of serious incidents. However, due to pandemic restrictions, the steel trade body has requested its members to do whatever is possible for them to review their process safety approaches and report it.

It urged members to manage process safety management risks through excellence in operational and maintenance practices. The management must ensure that they ask and listen to workers in identifying and understanding real safety requirements. In addition, members are requested to identify risks introduced by new processes introduced in mills in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
